Early critiques of the rational choice approach in political science for example, argued that the rational choice theorists could not explain why people voted, much less make more sophisticated arguments about political behavior. Rodney Stark has been a mayor proponent of the Rational Choice Theory within the sociology of religion. Rational choice theory can be helpful in understanding individual and collective behaviors. It helps to pinpoint why people, groups and society as a whole move toward certain choices, based on specific costs and rewards. Rational choice theory also helps to explain seemingly “irrational” behavior.

Rational choice theory has become increasingly employed in social sciences other than economics, such as sociology, evolutionary theory and political science in recent decades. [7] [8] It has had far-reaching impacts on the study of political science , especially in fields like the study of interest groups, elections , behaviour in legislatures, coalitions , and bureaucracy . [9] Rational choice theory is a theoretical framework commonly used in various social sciences including economics, political sciences, and sociology. While in economics, rational choice theory has become the dominant paradigm, this has not been the case in sociology.

In its highbrow (esoteric) variant, rational choice is on the way out in political science. 2. GROWTH OF THE RATIONAL CHOICE THEORY Rational choice is argued to have developed as part of the behavioural revolution in American political science of the 1950s and 1960s which sought to investigate how individuals behaved, using empirical methods. The approach has increasingly become a Rational choice theory is actually more than one theory per se, but the basic similarities among its variants mean that they can be intelligibly amalgamated for the purposes of critiquing its implementation in political science. Therefore public choice theory, positive political science, rational Rational choice theory (see Rational Choice Theory: Cultural Concerns) is the most serious attempt to fully acknowledge the normativity that is crucial to intentional explanation, and the subjective meanings that play their indispensable role in behavioral and attitudinal rationality, without giving up the aim of a unified science based on Rational choice approaches in political science. STRENGHTS OF THE RATIONAL CHOICE THEORY •The rational choice theory has largely emerged in the political science subfield. It has been commended as the prototype for a more deductive approach to political analysis. Becker (1976) has described the rational choice model as “a unified framework for understanding all human behaviour”. Rational choice only looks at certain types of human behavior and decision-making, but this model has become very influential in political science. The rational choice approach has been adopted to explain a great variety of behaviors—from how members of Congress act in their home districts to how individuals decide to join (or not join) interest groups. It evaluates a theory of why people do or do not vote. The theory, Rational Choice Theory, is one only an economist could write, an economist who never talked to any actual voter.
